4 Essential Practices for Your Home Workspace

4-essentials-for-your-workspace-home

When forced to leave the comfort and routines of our offices, many of us are faced with less than ideal work set-ups at home. Couches become desks, and living rooms turn into conference centers. However, with the right tools, a home workspace can become just as user-friendly (or even more so) than the ones we have at the office. Keep reading for four ways you can upgrade your workspace at home!

1. Set Up a Workstation

The golden rule of working from home is to set up a clear work area. That’s right- get out of bed and off of the couch! Part of the struggle of remote work is getting into the right mindset at home, which is why setting up a workstation is key. Use a desk, take over part of the kitchen table, sit on the floor at a coffee table, or have a standing desk at the counter- the possibilities are endless, you just need to choose the area you’ll be the most focused and comfortable in. To make your workspace more user friendly, ensure you’re sitting in the right chair and use pillows to provide lumbar support. If you’re missing the comforts of laptop stands or monitors, they can be easily purchased on Amazon, or you can DIY with some books for a stand and use a smart TV as a second screen.

2. Office Supplies

We are all working from home for the foreseeable future. Instead of complaining that your home workspace lacks the comforts of office life, invest in a few staples to make life easier. Set up lamps for the right lighting, move a power strip to ensure everything can charge at once, and use an extension cord so your workspaces aren’t limited to spaces next to outlets. Stock up on any printer needs, buy home-friendly essentials such as this mini paper shredder, and set yourself up with all your favorite desk supplies within arm’s reach.

Quarantined with others? Noise-canceling headphones will be your best friend. Slip a pair on and revel in the silence as all background sounds disappear. Don’t worry- you can lower cancellation levels or turn down the music to still be able to hear a doorbell or a little one yelling “mom” or “dad”. Having a pair of these headphones protects your ears from cranking music to top volume while keeping you sane when it comes to working amidst partners, children, and pets.

3. Decor

Even though you’re at home, you should still make your space feel special with some decor! Place houseplants nearby to bring some greenery into your life. Arrange photos of friends and family nearby and add in any other trinkets that bring joy, such as pieces of art and travel mementos. Functional items can also serve as decor. Don’t be afraid to use that nicer throw blanket or fancy mug and dishware for lunch to keep things fun and interesting- even if you're on your 20th sandwich of quarantine!

4. Support Services

Reception CCWhile we are all socially distant, it doesn’t mean that you can’t seek out business support. Now more than ever, it is important to know that you aren’t alone- especially when it comes to your work life. At AdvantEdge Workspaces, our clients enjoy call answering and mail services. With our team’s transition to remote work, we have been able to get these same amenities up and running. No need to worry about mail piling up, or that no one will be able to answer a call if you’re busy making lunch for kids or tied down with something else. We are here to continue to support you during this time!
