4 Tips to Stay Fit and Focused in the Office

07.16.15

health-blog-photoSitting at a desk all day isn’t very good for you. Despite the fact that it can lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, and numerous other negative health effects, studies show that sitting in a chair for more than six hours a day can increase your chances of a heart attack up to 54%! In addition, leading a sedentary lifestyle can slow down your metabolism and decrease your insulin sensitivity. But don’t fret, we put together a list of activities you can do in the office to stay active throughout the day. Don’t think you have to sign up for spin class 5 times a week, just incorporate these moves into your office routine to stay healthy and focused!

Walk and Talk

Walking is a great way to get a little extra exercise in the office and also helps clear your mind. Even just walking to the printer, the water cooler (try to get those 8 glasses a day), or taking a lap around the floor can reduce stress and help you stay alert throughout the day. Taking the stairs and parking just a bit farther away each morning are good ways to fit more steps into your day. If you can't get out of the office, stand up frequently to stay loose. Standing while you’re talking phone calls or standing up to read documents will help you spend less time in your chair. Aim for a 50:50 ratio between standing and sitting each day.

Breathe In, Breathe Out

Another easy workout, stretching, can get you moving without even leaving your desk. Every hour or two take a moment to stretch your arms and legs. Reach above your head, in front of you and behind you or do a few arm circles to release tension in your shoulders and back. In addition, a simple 5 to 10 minute yoga routine can help relieve tension and increase your metabolism as well as provide a break to refocus your mind. If you're looking to burn more and tone your core sitting on a stability ball will tighen abdominal muscles and improve balance.
