Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness month? Millions of Americans face struggles with mental health, and sometimes the office can be a factor in these struggles. For the remainder of May, focus on how your workplace can improve mental health awareness through different activities. Check out these seven things to do with your team to spark conversations and help everyone on their path to wellness and balance.
1. Workshops
Host or attend workshops this month aimed at helping employees with their mental health. Learn about coping mechanisisms, better work/life balance, and reducing stress- just to name a few topics. If you can’t make an event, listen to a TED Talk about mental health awareness!
2. Get Outside
It is essential to step outside of the office, breathe in some fresh air, and get in touch with nature. This can be as simple as taking a phone call on a bench outside or walking to pick up lunch. If possible, move to work outside when you can or spend your lunch break away from your desk in the sun. You’ll head back into the office feeling rejuvenated!
3. Get Moving
Movement is not only good for our physical health, but our mental health as well. Get the team moving with a group workout class! You can do some self-led yoga in the morning or head out to one of the many boutique fitness studios in D.C. together. Depending on the size of the team, you can book a private class to get a more personalized experience. Short on time? Head out for a group walk or head to the workspace gym together.
4. Write It Down
Process your feelings at work by writing things down. Designate a notebook or digital document as a place to express and work through your thoughts. Not only does it feel great to get things outside of your brain, but it can be helpful to have a log of past issues and stressors when dealing with larger problems or discussions.
5. Promote Kindness
While mental health is complicated, being nice to others can always help. You never know what kind of day someone is having. Promote kindness in the office with random acts of kindness. Assign each team member a week to spread joy through small activities at work, such as writing notes or treating people to their favorite coffee. A little act can go a long way!
6. De-Stress Activities
Even in the workplace, it is important to take time for yourself to relax and re-focus. De-stressing activities such as massage chairs, coloring, listening to music, or even making your favorite cup of tea are all tools we have to keep ourselves sane at work. Look for a workspace that provides a low-stress environment and promotes balance, so that de-stressing can become a natural part of your day.
7. Give the Gift of Wellness
Lastly, close out the month by giving the ultimate gift of wellness, A spa day, massage, meditation class, or even a type of therapy- treat yourself or others!
