A Guide to Football Season at Work

With National Football League (NFL) kickoff tonight and college games in full swing, football season is finally upon us! While some are die-hard fans and others are just here for the tailgate, no matter what category you fall into, the season has something for everyone. At work, football is a great way to bring people together. Here are five tips for navigating football season in the office.

1. Sports as a Connector

Talking about current sporting events is a way to bring people together. Take stock of who roots for who on your team, and see if there are any new connections to be made. Who knows, maybe the person you pass every day while getting coffee shares an alma mater with you! Or, use weekend games as a conversation starter on Monday morning. Football provides a connection point that can lead to valuable relationships.

2. Team Spirit

Get out of the business-casual rut and plan a spirit day! Encourage everyone to wear their team’s apparel or colors. Bonus points for anyone who goes as the mascot!

3. Tailgate Cookoff

Tailgating is a huge part of football culture, at both the collegiate and professional levels. Have a tailgate-themed lunch or happy hour where everyone brings their favorite snack to watch the game with. You can vote at the end for favorites to bring a little friendly competition into the mix.

4. Beat Monday Morning Slump

With games sometimes going into the wee hours of the night on Sunday, Monday morning can feel like an extra drag during football season. Ensure everyone stays alert and productive by using a workspace with complimentary coffee and tea. Also, review some of the best productivity hacks so that everyone is set up for success in the office.

5. Have Fun!

Sports are a great way to bond as a team. Whether you all cheer on the same city or have established rivalries, it is all in good fun. Use this season to build connections with coworkers and bring levity to tough work days. Share memes, podcasts, articles, and swap stories at the coffee machine.
