Did you know April is Stress Awareness Month? You might be thinking, “I don’t need to be more aware of my stress!” and feel like thinking about stress is the last thing you need. However, thinking about our stress is essential to lessening it. This month, focus on yourself and make your days lighter in the office- whether for your workload, mental headspace, or both. Here are four ways to combat stress in the workplace:

1. Determine the Root

The initial step to reducing stress at work is discovering the main cause. Do you need more support? Do you hate your physical workspace? Are your tech systems outdated? Are your processes no longer serving you? Of course, there will always be things that we cannot change that induce stress. But focus on the root issues that are in your control, and begin a path towards fixing them.

2. Game Plan

Once you’ve determined the root(s) of major stressors in the workplace, draft a plan with solutions. Start with the stressor at the top, then list at least three action items below. Then, order the action items based on what is most achievable in the shortest amount of time. For example, if you are feeling overwhelmed and distracted, the action items could be as follows: set time limits on your phone, re-organize your desktop to reduce clutter, and automate specific tasks. Even if you do not end up following the game plan, just writing out stressors and potential solutions will get you in the right mindset.

3. Support Systems

BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM!

Having proper support systems in place can help alleviate numerous stressors in the workplace. When making your game plan, you’ll probably see that the root of many problems stems from your workload, and frustrations surrounding tasks and getting things done. 4. Overall Better Balance

Perfect work/life balance often seems elusive. However, working towards an equal balance of both parts of your life will be essential to combating long-term stress in the workplace. It is imperative to set boundaries, such as turning off work-related notifications during the evening, setting aside time for a midday workout class, or switching to a hybrid work model.
