The Best Ways To Decompress After a Long Work Week

Let’s face it- every week in 2020 can feel like an entire year. With the weeks and days only feeling longer as we head into winter months, being able to decompress from the workplace is essential to our sanity and productivity. Taking time to recharge your batteries after a tough week will benefit you and your professional life in the long run. Not sure where to start? Here are five ways to wind down after a hectic work week!

1. Don’t Take Work Home

“Don’t take work home” is the golden rule of being able to decompress after a long work week. Leave work at the office! This means file folders, laptops, and any other items that would compel you to put in hours during your precious time off. At AdvantEdge Workspaces, we keep your business running even when you are not in the office with mail reception and call answering services, among other amenities. So go ahead, leave an hour (or a few) early to decompress, knowing that your business is in good hands. Anything else can wait until the morning!

2. Be Present

Decompress by being present in your surroundings. Whether this means a cellphone free dinner with family or a long grounding walk in nature, removing yourself from your professional workspace bubble is key to relaxing. If you are having trouble leaving the worries of the workday behind, try activities that require concentration, such as playing a sport, working on a puzzle, or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen.

3. Practice Self-care

Self-care is essential but will look different for everyone. It may be going for a run, spending time with family, having an at-home spa day, or simply laying on the couch watching TV with takeout. Self-care is whatever you need to do to rejuvenate yourself. It’s not just self-serving- taking care means coming back to the office with a clearer headspace, being ready to work and take on the day. 4. Set Yourself Up for Success

To set yourself up for a successful relaxing weekend or evening, you’ll want to have a productive day. Tackle your inbox, wrap up projects, and plan the following week to ensure you are leaving work in a good place. There are a variety of productivity hacks that are perfect to try in situations where the end of the workday can’t come soon enough. 5. Turn Off Technology

While smartphones and cloud-based services are a blessing, they can hinder our capabilities to tune out professional responsibilities. If you have a work cell phone, turn it off and place it out of sight in a drawer. You can notify colleagues that you are disconnecting and set up an away message to indicate that you should only be reached in an emergency. If you use your personal phone for work, delete work apps such as Slack, Outlook, and Evernote. The temptation to open an app “just to check real quick” is hard to avoid, and with deleting (even for an evening) you remove that almost Pavlovian response to look at work.

It’s easier to decompress from a long work week when your workspace makes life easier! At AdvantEdge Workspaces, it is our goal to support your business to ensure you can truly enjoy your time off.
