Wellness at work is more than packing a healthy lunch or using a fancy treadmill desk- it means doing things to help you feel good mentally and physically. You can make small changes in your workday that have a major impact and are free!
In a time where it can be hard to disconnect and easy to overwork oneself, wellness in the workplace is more important than ever. Here are four reasons why you should incorporate wellness into your work life:
1. Prevent Burnout
An AdvantEdge "Wellness Kit"
A recent Gallup survey of 7,500 working adults found that 23% often experienced burnout. Burnout at work affects one’s psychological and physical health, and can easily spill over and impact our personal lives as well.
Being part of a workspace that values wellness is key to keeping burnout at bay. Look for spaces with a gym, outdoor areas, separate places to eat, and quiet rooms for when you need a change of scenery. When your company and space encourages healthy office habits, you’ll feel better and work better.
2. Stay Focused
Much like how your body needs sleep every night, your brain needs regular rest too! Each day, put 10-15 minute breaks on the calendar, just like you would do with a meeting. Take that time to do a guided meditation, walk outside, close your eyes, have a mini dance party (with headphones in)- anything that will take your mind off of work. You’ll come back to your desk feeling refreshed and with a renewed sense of focus.
3. Keep Your Physical Health in Line

Did you know that there are many health risks associated with long periods of sitting? Obesity, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high body fat are all associated with spending too much time a chair, according to the Mayo Clinic. Look for a workspace that gives you the option to use a standing desk or an office that is big enough to roll out a yoga mat and do some movement.
While sitting can sometimes feel like the only way to get work done, start small and challenge yourself to take one call while walking a day or to get up and stroll around the office every hour. Trust us, your body will thank you!
4. Better Work/Life Balance
Smartphones are amazing, but unfortunately, it means we often carry work home with us in our pockets. Doing work at home is often inevitable, but by taking breaks during the day, such as completing a workout during lunch, or even eating healthy meals and snacks, you’ll feel less frazzled and exhausted by the time you get home. By making tweaks to your schedule, you can be more relaxed and present when it comes to spending time with family and friends after leaving the office.
At AdvantEdge Workspaces, we recognize that wellness is just as important as doing your job. That is why we have outdoor spaces, quiet areas, and even a meditation and massage room. This week we are launching our wellness initiative, which is kicking off with free yoga and boot camp classes at our Chevy Chase location!
